Currently the club has over 300 players through its network of 4 University and 13 College sides. DURFC has a long & proud tradition as a centre of rugby excellence in England: 7 times UAU Champions 1951-1987 & BUSA Champions in 2004. The club has helped to produce 35 international players, 7 British Lions, 3 England Captains & 2 RFU Presidents, including world cup winner, Will Greenwood, Chris Oti, Charlie Hodgson and England Captains Will Carling and Phil De Glanville – all of whom are still regularly support the club. The profile of the club throughout the business community is strong and continues to grow through its 3,000 strong Alumni Association – a widespread association covering not only the United Kingdom, but expanding into businesses and business people throughout the world. This season sees the further development of the club’s profile in the media. DURFC have appointed a press officer, who will liaise with the local and national press, and are about to re-launch an internet presence aimed at current players, and the Alumni Association. The website will provide access to news and results, online shopping facilities and sponsor related links and profiles. The club’s aim is to harness the power of the web-facility to allow players, supporters, alumni and the public to interact with its sponsors. It is indeed sponsorship which plays such a key role in the running of Durham University RFC. Direct costs associated to the running and maintenance of so many teams rise every year and as an academic institution Durham does not receive the level of Government funding applied to sports academy universities. Durham have only one paid member of staff, with all other coaches and officers giving their time free of charge to the club towards the common goal of developing our players. “Durham University & student rugby as a whole have always played an important role in developing & sustaining rugby talent in the UK. It is still the case even in this era of professionalism – but in order for university clubs such as DURFC to continue to flourish they do need more funding.” said Will Greenwood. Rugby in Durham is strong – and DURFC will continue to grow with the help and support offered to us by the business community. Hopefully we can grow together and form a successful partnership in the future. To Sponsor Durham University, contact:
