Durham Students to Tour France with England CountiesTwo members of DURFC, Alistair Simmie (St. Cuthberts) and Daniel Cooper (formerly St. Chads), have been called up to represent the England Counties XV in the inaugural FIRA/AER Festival to be held in the south of France from September 5-13. Both players have been included in the squad of 26 selected from all non-Premiership players who were involved in last season’s county championships and look set to play prominent roles as England take on the Russian and Spanish national teams as well as a tough fixture against France Amateurs.
Cooper’s selection comes off the back of a tremendously successful set of performances for the all-conquering Durham County team that were victorious in the 2006/7 County Championship Plate competition. The open side flanker put in a number of man-of-the-match performances as he used his mastery of the ‘dark arts’ to good effect under the experimental law variations that were introduced by the RFU for the competition. Although Cooper’s appearances for DURFC in the 2006/7 season were limited due to injury, the tenacious former Sport student was part of the silver-medal winning DURFC BUSA Sevens team, an experience that paved the way for his recent appearance for Premiership outfit Wasps in the Middlesex Sevens.
Although experiencing life in France and Spain was the number one priority for languages student Simmie this year, the talented fly-half was still able to turn in impressive performances for DURFC in their annual fixture with the Cambridge Blues XV, as well as picking up a winner’s medal with the Durham County XV. However, the highlight of his year must have undoubtedly come in the shape of selection for the England Students representative team alongside DURFC team mate Greg Irvin and former 1st XV captain Tommy Malaney. All three featured heavily in a Students team that completed an historic double over their French counterparts, but it was Simmie’s impressive performances with the ball in hand that earned him his place in the Counties squad.
All at DURFC wish both players luck for the forthcoming tour and look forward to continuing not only our strong history of providing representative players, but also, our links with Durham County RFU and the local community.
Keep an eye out for updates on how the two lads are getting on as well as match reports on durfc.com
